Settled in 1532, São Vicente is the oldest Portuguese settlement in the Americas. With a safe harbor, it is a bustling port. Its sister-city, São Paolo, founded 20 years ago in 1554, is 50 km inland but worth the trip while your ship is in port because it is cooler and less plagued by insects. Both cities have grown rapidly due to the Atlantic trade. The distance to Portugal has resulted in great freedom. Ships of many nations, and those without nations, land here. Cargoes from Spanish gold ships and from English traders and Dutch galleons can be found for sale in Sao Paolo. The fact that these cargoes were pirated is scarcely concealed. It is considered most impolite to inquire.
The people are as diverse as the goods traded. The free people of São Vicente and São Paolo are black or Indian or white, and every possible mixture. Slavery is practiced in Brazil, despite the Pope’s bull against it, and the slaves may be black or Indian or white. Slipping away to a pirate ship is a good way to improve your life. This is a land of opportunity, of sudden wealth, and where the rigid rules of class and status of Europe are being re-formed.
The São Paolo Ships Market is always a great attraction. The latest ship may have brought goods that have been unobtainable for years in Brazil. Or perhaps the owner may sell you a treasure at a bargain price. Watch your back, don’t pick a fight, but don’t miss shopping there while your ship is anchored here.
